Locate Your HOI4 Folder
In Steam, right-click HOI4 and pick Manage → Browse local files. Default path is

Install path and Gatekeeper handling differ on macOS. Use this guide for both Intel and Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) Macs running macOS 11 Big Sur or newer. The unlocker is a universal binary, so the same archive runs on both architectures.
Step 01

Quit Hearts of Iron IV
Fully quit HOI4 from the dock if it is open. Steam itself can stay running.
Step 03
Open the HOI4 App Bundle
In Steam, right-click Hearts of Iron IV → Manage → Browse local files. Finder opens at the install folder — usually
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Hearts of Iron IV/.Step 04
Show Package Contents
Right-click the
hoi4.app bundle and choose Show Package Contents. Open Contents → Resources → dlc/.Step 05
Drop the Manifest
Unzip the downloaded archive and drag
dlc_manifest.json into the dlc/ folder. macOS may prompt for your admin password — confirm with Touch ID or your account password.Step 06
Bypass Gatekeeper (First Run Only)
If macOS blocks the auto-patcher helper with "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified", open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. Later launches are silent.
Step 07
Grant Full Disk Access (Optional)
For the auto-patcher to write to the app bundle automatically, add
hoi4-dlc-patcher to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access. Without it you will need to re-drop the manifest after each Paradox update.Step 08
Launch HOI4 from Steam
Start the game from your Steam library as normal. The Paradox launcher shows every hearts of iron 4 dlc as installed — the same outcome as on Windows.
Apple Silicon note: HOI4 itself runs through Rosetta 2 on M-series Macs. The unlocker is a universal binary so no separate ARM build is needed. The manifest is plain JSON and platform-independent.

dlc_manifest.json is backed up to dlc/_backup_manifest.json on first install. Delete the dropped file and rename the backup to restore Steam's default DLC visibility.
